"Great nursing care at home"

About: Community Nursing / District Nursing

(as a relative),

My husband who is 88 and has prostate cancer and has also had a catheter for the past 8 years started to experience severe pain. This is unfortunately a common occurrence but on this occasion the painkillers and numbing gel did not work. We got almost no sleep that night but I did not want to call for an ambulance as he has no wish to end up in hospital.

First thing in the morning, I called the community nurse and left a message explaining the situation. Gary arrived very promptly. He explored all possibilities and decided there was an infection in the catheter which had become blocked. He gave my husband morphine and a calming medicine. His manner and explanations calmed both of us. He took his time to attend properly to my husband although this must have disrupted his schedule for the whole day. It is this kind of care that allows my husband to go on living in his own home. We cannot speak highly enough of the community nursing service

Dear Catnip88

My name is Julie Fitzpatrick and I am the Interim Chief Nurse for East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership.

I am pleased you took the time to provide feedback on your experience of asking for help from community nursing. I can appreciate the issues and concerns for your husband, who has been dealing with prostate cancer and a catheter for the last 8 years.

I am delighted that when your husband started to experience pain the response from Gary was immediate. That must have reassured you both and his professionalism and expertise in the care he provided has made a difference in what can be a recurring issue with catheters.

I am delighted that the care you receive allows your husband to live in his own home as that is what matters to you both.

Best wishes

Julie
