"A few suggestions"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Female Medical

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

My mother has been in hospital since Sunday night. My mother has been treated so well. The staff on female medical have been great with my mum. The communication has been brilliant between nurses, doctors physios, OT’s and the family. They are keeping us well updated. The care has been very good, however we have a few suggestions that could make a difference to the patients.

-My mother can be very restless and unsettled at night and this can disrupt other patients, so maybe providing patients with eye masks and ear plugs would help other patients to settle better, as we know this can be unsettling for other patients as much as it is for my mother.

-The bins could have slow closing lids, as when they bang close it can scare/wake patients on the ward.

-the curtains can come off the rails and this can impact a patients privacy.

-Having a selection of chargers for patients who’s batteries in their phones might be dead would be very helpful.

-The toilets are quite small and could be better equipped with mobility aids for patients who require the support.

-Record keeping should be thoroughly checked, as one morning my mother slept through her pain meds and when she woke she was in pain and it was stated on her notes that she refused pain medication, but she didn’t. She was asleep.

One situation that really left my mum quite upset was the night she came in to ED, she requires a pad as she has urinary incontinence. One of the staff member in ED said to my mother “right let’s get your happy changed”. This upset my mother and was very degrading to a lady of her age. It wasn’t very professional.

However, overall the care has been very good and my mother has been treated so well on female medical.

Hi thank you for your response about female medical ward.

I have been checking with different teams about a few of the suggestions to see if I could make a change for you and a change for the ward

I would personally love to give ear plugs and eye masks however the fall risk is far to great on a ward of our size

I have asked my manager could we look into maybe giving ear plugs to independent young people so that might be a change in the future

The bins I have thoroughly checked out but the bins that have the slow closer are not stocked for Daisy Hill Hospital anymore unfortunately.

The toilets recently got a upgrade and have aids in to help such as bars on each side to help people stand and sit.

The curtains unfortunately are for infection control reasons I agree they easily fall off we as staff must make sure we get them hung up right as soon as possible.

The chargers are a great idea I hope to get staff members to bring in old chargers they have I hope to have this set up soon as all chargers will need safety checked before we can give them to patients.

I will look into the record keeping for you and see what has happened

Thank you again for your positive words and ideas
