"The staff provide top quality care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 4 North Surgical Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been on 4 North for one week. I first arrived to the Emergency Department, where I waited 4 1/2 hours before seeing the doctor, then another 6 before I got to the ward.

Everybody on this ward is lovely - the nurses, care assistants, cleaners and porters have all been fabulous. The ward staff have kept me company, we have had good craic and I've enjoyed chatting to them.

I just find it annoying the way I am being sent home today without receiving my operation to remove my gallstones and I have to come back again in another while to the day surgery. It would of been great to get it done now and out of the way before I go home.

The communication with the doctors is alright, I definitely think it could be improved as I've only seen the doctor I'm supposed to be seeing twice.

The ward's spotless, I've a lot of room and feel very comfortable. If it was a hotel I would definitely come back again 😂

The food on the other hand isn't good. I haven't ate any of it, it has a very strange smell. Thankfully my husband's been bringing me up food and I've been using the hospital shop.

I think this is a very busy ward and the staff work extremely hard but I think having more staff on the ward for the older people would be very beneficial. I have been sharing a bay with an older lady and I have noticed her finding it hard to get the staff's attention at times, so I have helped her out and called for a nurse when she is struggling.

I just think it would be easy for people like her who can't speak up to  be forgotten about, therefore having more staff to keep an eye on the older ones would be great. But I don't fault any of the staff on this ward, they have been very helpful and provide top quality care.

Once the emergency department has a significant number of bed waits, the department becomes overcrowded. There are no available cubicles to assess people attending and there are lengthy waiting times. It sounds like you should have been placed in an inpatient ward after initial treatment in ED Thank you for being so understanding. The ED team will only move someone to an inpatient ward when a bed becomes available. Unfortunately the inpatient wards are experiencing delays in getting patients discharged from their wards, the flow of patients slows up and the ED becomes blocked.

We hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Paul Smyth

Head of ED
