"Care I received after a cycling accident"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

8 weeks ago I fell off my bike and broke my pelvis and collar bone and was admitted to Wishaw hospital for 10 days.  I was picked up by two wonderful paramedics who reassured my and even tho I was in great pain made me smile and got me to hospital safely.

I spent 36 hours in A&E being looked after by the amazing staff who were rushed off their feet, but at the same time made me feed looked after and cared for.  I was then admitted to Ward 14 (ortho) and was in terrible pain from my collar bone, staff quickly got ontop of this and were keen to make sure I was comfortable and helped me manage the pain.  After a lengthy discussion with the consultant, I underwent surgery by Mr Fraser-Moodie, on my collar bone and his team, and although extremely nervous and scared, I felt in safe hands, I remained in the care of the hospital for 10 days.  Over these 10 days, I met some wonderful patents that lifted my spirits, watched soaps that I will never watch again and each day watched the hard work and dedication of all the staff on the ward to make sure we were looked after with care and dignity.  Everyone from that nurses, Doctors and aux were just amazing, they have such tough jobs and did it with such patience and understanding, I felt very lucky to be in their care.  I actually dreaded being washed, but the staff did it with such care and dignity, I looked forward to them coming to wash me and help with my personal needs as they made me feel so relaxed.

When I came out from surgery, the following day the 3 ladies in my ward celebrated with a little breakfast roll, one of the nurses went to the canteen to order these for us and would not take any money, this was not a huge financial cost, but yet again an indication of the just how special these people are and we should appreciate them greatly.

I hear many challenging stories about the NHS, my experience has been one or consistent patient care, throughout my whole experience and I would like to thanks all the staff for just being so marvelous, you really do make a huge impact to patients.

Dear Ginger Family

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent experience of services at University Hospital Wishaw. This must have been a very stressful and painful time for you. I am pleased to hear that you felt looked after and cared for by the staff in A&E despite having to wait for a period of time. I am glad to hear that the staff in ward 14 were able to help with your pain and that you had successful surgery by Mr Fraser Moodie. It is good to hear that your care following surgery was carried out with care and dignity.

I will be delighted to pass on your kind words to all of the staff involved in helping you during your experience.

I hope that you are continuing to recover well at home
