"Visit to ED"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I visited ED for my family member for 10pm after 111 person said to go in for 10pm. On arrival we were told it was not an appointment. The sign on the ED reception said 2-3 hour wait.

Went in and waited. Saw Nurse Steve who triaged. Then said would wait for doctor. After 4-5 hours checked with reception for update and told would see doctor next. Another 2 hours later called by doctor, who kindly offered food as it had been so long.

The waiting room had a tv that was unplugged and not in use, a hot drink dispenser that did not work and a cold water unit with no cups. Also at no time were updates displayed or shown in the waiting room, the staff were busy and the waiting area was full, but it would have been nice to have seen some updates. Also all the lights were on in the waiting area and there was no dimly lit areas to move to, which would have been nice for an overnight visit to the department. This was frustrating for a long wait. However, the area was clean looked tidy.

After assessment,  review and outcome we left after just over 7 hours. However, the sign on the reception showed wait times were now 3-4 hours. So this was not accurate.

All in all the staff were great and delivered excellent care, but the waiting area was disappointing.

Dear Karl1,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I have reviewed the facilities within the waiting room this morning and found that the TV was still unplugged but was not faulty so this is now back in use.

The drink dispensers and the vending machines are managed by an outside company. The hot drinks dispenser and vending machines are all working and stocked today. I would like to apologise that this was not the case when you came into the department.

The cold water dispenser has been reported to our facilities department as it is not working, we have asked them to request for the machine to be reviewed by the company to see if it can be fixed. This is an ongoing issue and we have asked for an alternative arrangement to be considered.

As a department are in the process of implementing more regular checks of these facilities in the department to ensure that faults are picked up on sooner and actioned in time.

Thank you again, I will ensure that all the staff get to see your feedback. We hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Sophie Grills
ED Governance & Operational Support Manager
