"Most of the staff seem to come in do their job and leave"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 North Cardiology

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been on 1 north for one week, I arrived last Saturday for an appointment with the doctor and after receiving some results of a test the doctor decided I need to stay in.

The doctor rang up to one north to find me a bed,  when I arrived there was no beds but one of the nurses quickly got me sorted which was good.  At times the quality of care is alright and at times its not so good, the staff aren't very friendly they seem to come in do your blood pressure then say they will be back in five minutes and then you don't see them for hours later.

Getting my bloods done has been a bit of a disaster as I cant give blood very easily an anytime the nurse comes to do it there seems to be a whole hassle about it. There is a nurse who works night shifts is good at it.

The communication is okay although every morning this week a different man has came round to see me, this is very confusing as you are constantly repeating yourself. The ward facilities are clean and the foods good its just repetition of the same stuff. I feel like its just a very long week in here and I would love to get home for a few days. Most of the staff seem to come in do their job and leave, there isn't any cheering you up or being friendly, but some members of staff are really great.

Good afternoon,

I am sorry you have had to spend time in hospital. I hope to answer some of your complaints.

I was pleased to hear you were directly admitted to the ward, which meant you did not have to spend a long time in an overcrowded ED Department awaiting a bed.

I apologise that you have not found the staff friendly, we receive very positive feedback about the nursing staff in 1 North. At this time the staff are under a great deal of pressure often working short, with extra patients being nursed on corridors, as highlighted in the media.

At times if a patient is comfortable and stable the staff will complete the tasks necessary and deal with those patients who are more unwell.

With regards to seeing a different man every morning, we work on a Consultant of the week basis. This means a Consultant Cardiologist sees the patients in 1 North on a daily. Sometimes this may change once or twice a week, which might explain why you felt you saw a different doctor regularly.

I am sorry you have not had a good experience in 1 North, but I wish you all the best in the future,

Regards,

Eileen Magowan,

Clinical Sister,

1 North.
