"They refused to see him"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner has been ill for over a week on a few occasions at the hospital the consultant treated him badly and blamed it on his mental health, then 2 days in row have refused him care. I phoned an ambulance as he had passed out and didn't respond, the minute the paramedics came one of them told me to be quiet and they were to talk. They were so rude, told that my partner used to self-harm and the paramedic commented that everyone has a bad time in life. I was so disgusted that I left the room.

When he was taken to Hairmyres A&E they refused to see him. I am at breaking point with it all, you can't refuse anyone medical help, I was in hospital yesterday was told I've got a viral infection 😢  since then I've been having all sorts of pain, weakness in my arms, dizziness,  really bad brain fog. Just had enough with it all, I feel that staff at Hairmyres have laughed in my partner's face and they don't have a clue the daily struggles he has with mental health.

I would hate for anyone to have to suffer in silence, that's why I'm standing up for my partner as I don't even sleep with the worry as he gets refused medical care, I'm writing this to try show people it's ok not be OK but we all need to get the care and respect. I try so hard to be strong as I have to be there to look after him and my daughter, it's the worry when he's ill and we don't know where to go as he never gets answers.

Dear squattb37

Thank you for sharing your story.

It sounds like you and your partner are going through a very difficult time. I do hope that you eventually receive the help you need.

I am disappointed to read that you felt the ambulance crew's behaviour was less than exemplary.

If you would like me to have their behaviour investigated may I ask that you contact me at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, Care Opinion name, your partner's name and the date and address we attended.

Please take care.

Kindest regards

David

Dear squattb37

I am sorry to read that your partner has been declined care and that he has not been treated with respect when attending the hospital. This has obviously been a stressful time for both yourself and your partner and I would like to look into your concerns further. I would be grateful if your partner contacts patient affairs so that we can discuss the issues that you have raised.

Please email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or phone 01355 585325

Thank you

Lise

Update posted by squattb37 (a relative)

Got a response back from my complaint and it is absolutely disgusting, I have been unable to go to work can't even sleep, for the hospital to say abusive behaviour won't be tolerated. Myself and partner understand that.

There was no apology of how my partner is treated and no one taking any responsibility, I feel it is really unfair how the staff seem to make fun out of my partners mental health. It's not a joke, I worry one day he will take his own life.

The staff in ward 4 were really nice, but I feel like the staff in A&E don't know how to treat patients when it comes to mental health and I have found this time very distressing. I would not bring anyone in my family here, I would rather go to Glasgow as I don't like how the staff have seemed to get away with everything, thanks.
