(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I came into hospital yesterday morning as I had pains in my chest but I am prone to clots and knew by the pain, it was another one. I will say that the staff were very helpful, the receptionist in particular, however the wait was just ridiculous. I spent hours in A&E and yet as soon as I was seen I was immediately sent to the AMU ward. This highlighted to me the severe issue emergency departments are experiencing. The care I have received in AMU has been first-class.

In relation to the lengthy waiting time. We do not want people waiting for such long times.

The department like all the emergency departments in Northern Ireland has been experiencing problems with overcrowding in that when there are no admission beds available on the inpatient wards, patients have to remain in ED for long periods of time until one becomes available. This leaves no available cubicle space for new arrivals, the staff are stretched trying to care for bed waits and new patients attending. Significant bed waits are the single biggest cause of lengthy waiting times in ED.

The patient flow team and the inpatient ward staff are working to improve the flow of admissions out of the ED. Better flow will reduce overcrowding and waiting times.
