"Using econsult and my medical notes"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

I did an econsult regarding some pain I was experiencing. There is a section for allergies which I filled in and added that I could not take NSAID oral medications, this is due to some issues with my oesophagus and stomach.

The GP who email replied prescribed Naproxen...this is one of these medications. When I phoned the practice the receptionist was very helpful and said they would speak to the doctor, they then got back to me and said that it was nowhere in my notes that I cannot take these drugs.

I know for a fact it has been documented previously, but that as I have avoided them for years it's not been an issue. Whether in my records or not however, I had specified it in the allergies, or do my wishes not count?

Dear Loube,

Thanks for sharing your experience and I’m sorry to hear you ended up with a prescription you weren't able to take.

In answer to your question – yes, your opinion does matter! All healthcare professionals in Scotland should be working to deliver care that has shared decision making at it’s core, and that means patients and healthcare professionals having meaningful discussions about treatments options and moving away from the ‘doctor knows best’ approach. I’m sorry you felt frustrated and ignored after your consultation.

It would be helpful to be able to share this with directly with the GP practice – though you may have done this already? Most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and aren’t registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion. They don’t routinely access the feedback either so the practice won’t see this without it going straight to them.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, I can forward your story to them anonymously, but I’d need you to share the practice name with me directly. If you’d like me to do that I can be contacted on email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or by text/phone: 07885720267. Help is also available to share your concerns with the GP Practice from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). PASS are an independent service offering free and confidential advice and they can be contacted on 0800 917 2127, or for more information please go to www.patientadvicescotland.org.uk

Take care,

Kirsten
