"Lung cancer diagnosis"

About: Respiratory Medicine / Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Team

(as the patient),

A mass was found on my right lung during an x-ray for an entirely different issue.  Being told this was obviously extremely worrying but we were very quickly introduced to our specialist nurse and she kept us well informed while all the other necessary investigative tests were arranged.

From the first day we met Adele and the team we feel we have been kept fully informed about the various tests and why they were required.  We were given honest answers about the reality of the situation but also reassured not to jump to conclusions and about the range of treatments that might be possible.  We were told we could call anytime with questions and when we did we always had a quick response and always felt like they knew us and the case details right away and we weren’t just another patient they had to look up on a system.  They helped with a range of issues such as letters for insurance companies and introduced us to wider cancer support services.  We even received a phone call the day after a biopsy just to see how I was.  When we’ve met other team members or spoke on the phone we’ve had similar service and it feels like they all work well as a team and keep each other informed and when they say they will follow something up it happens.

I honestly can’t praise the service enough and, at a time when there is so much in press about hospital waiting times, we were reassured that these types of situations are still being dealt with quickly.

Facing a lung cancer diagnosis is extremely scary and it’s never going to be an easy time but dealing with Adele and this team has made me feel like an individual person who is being cared for and supported through the journey and that I matter.  It’s the way all health care services should operate but sadly isn’t always the case and I can’t thank them enough.
