"Concern for inadequate staffing and neglect of care."

About: Essex County Council Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

(as a relative),

17 weeks on from a loved one going into hospital, as a family we have been desperately assisting in every way, but we are constantly seeing a lack of person centred care, progression to get our dear loved on into a care home and rejection after rejection to the point we are in fear of losing our loved one as the spark has gone, the desire to live has gone as they feel of no worth, not valued, left, forgotten and that they are causing so much extra strain on the close family.

A vulnerable, disabled, elderly person should never be made to feel neglected, rejected or a problem; there seems to be barrier after barrier and excuse by many parties in the Multi Disciplinary Team (MTD) and we are exhausted, emotionally drained and concerned for our loved one deeply. We have asked for support; but we seem to have to chase to get answers, to attend to get action, to fight to get our loved ones voice heard! It is totally soul destroying watching the vibrant, fun loving, giggling person slowly disappear as each day they are rejected or neglected further.

The system is in disarray and there seems to be no advocate to help families in our position, no voice of reason to get things done and actioned now not when the loved one has died when it is all too late.

There are some occasional beams of hope in the nurses and HCA, but they are less rather than more. We hope that no other family has to endure and keep dealing with what we are. Action is needed for better staffing retention, focus on person centred care and a better connection and communication between social care, Discharge, placement, medical and families moving forwards. Sadly we do not hold much hope.
