My daughter was admitted to the children's ward at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI) with breathing difficulties and a racing heartbeat.
To the positives first; she was dealt with swiftly and professionally to start with and met with some really lovely staff on both dayshift and nightshift giving her regular checks and making sure she was comfortable at all times.
To the negatives the communication between nursing staff and doctors and on shift changes was very questionable and the lack of communication to us as parents as to what was happening with her care at times was very poor.
We also felt as time went on she was completely forgotten about as she became better. Nebulizers were put on her and forgotten to be turned off. This shouldn't be a parents job to have to switch off or have to buzz when left on too long.
The Doctor requested regular spot checks and manual adjustments to oxygen requirements nearer the end. This didn't happen, meaning a possible longer stay in hospital as only 1 nurse ever did this.
After discharge I phoned for information about medication as it was labelled up completely different to what I was told so just wanted to double check and no one called me back.
Special mention to the play staff who always tried to keep her occupied and happy during her stay. They do a fantastic job and my daughter loved chatting to them.
