"Both positive and negative paediatric care"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to the children's ward at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI) with breathing difficulties and a racing heartbeat.

To the positives first; she was dealt with swiftly and professionally to start with and met with some really lovely staff on both dayshift and nightshift giving her regular checks and making sure she was comfortable at all times.

To the negatives the communication between nursing staff and doctors and on shift changes was very questionable and the lack of communication to us as parents as to what was happening with her care at times was very poor.

We also felt as time went on she was completely forgotten about as she became better. Nebulizers were put on her and forgotten to be turned off. This shouldn't be a parents job to have to switch off or have to buzz when left on too long.

The Doctor requested regular spot checks and manual adjustments to oxygen requirements nearer the end. This didn't happen, meaning a possible longer stay in hospital as only 1 nurse ever did this.

After discharge I phoned for information about medication as it was labelled up completely different to what I was told so just wanted to double check and no one called me back.

Special mention to the play staff who always tried to keep her occupied and happy during her stay. They do a fantastic job and my daughter loved chatting to them.

Hi earthtp96, thank you so much for posting sending your feedback following your daughters stay on the children's ward. It is always really useful for us to receive positive and negative feedback and I am glad that you felt the play staff were helpful.

Lack of communication or miscommunication is often blamed for negative and poor experience within the care setting, but we should all be ensuring that we communicate effectively with families and with each other which should ensure a better experience for everyone, and I am sorry that this never happened with your daughter.

I would be very grateful if you could contact me via e-mail at kirstine.burns@nhs.scot so that I can arrange to discuss the situation further with you.

In the meantime, I hope that your daughter is recovering well at home following her stay in hospital.

Kirstine Burns
