"Lack of care in Early Pregnancy unit"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

In November of 2022, I visited the EPU at Bolton Hospital as part I was suffering some pain and light bleeding. I’d like to add, I had pains in my shoulders at this point in time.

When I arrived they asked me to do a pregnancy test which quickly came back as negative despite me getting a positive test that same morning. The nurse was blunt and said that if I truly had been pregnant it was likely a chemical pregnancy and sent me on my way. No further tests nor any scans offered.

5 weeks later I was blue-lighted back to Bolton hospital as I had suffered a ruptured ectopic pregnancy which a scan would have detected.

I ended up having surgery to remove the tube and deal with my huge internal bleed that had been getting worse and worse over the course of 5 weeks as I had been given no aftercare or warning signs to look out for.

This was my second pregnancy, my first pregnancy was managed by Wigan Hospital who were fantastic. The EPU unit at Bolton hospital is the worst I’ve personally come across.

My experience was that I was not treated like a patient with them, they want you in and out as quickly as possible and that seems to mean that they will cut corners in your care and in my case, nearly cost you your life.
