"Friends experience as in-patient"

About: Royal Edinburgh Hospital / Old age psychiatry

(as a friend),

My friend, disabled due to Parkinson’s Disease, was admitted to Caanan ward for assessment and was in a room with the only call button on a wall beside the bed. At times he becomes immobile quite quickly and so unable to summon assistance.

He has medication administered via pump and tube into small intestine. Only one member of nursing staff had done the half hour live online training to manage this system. When I wondered whether the night nursing staff might do the training, I was told that they could not be made to “work” during the day - no suggestion of asking them if they might.

Discharge planning (to a new care home, rather than home) seemed casual. Had the care home staff been trained to manage the pumps?  I was advised that was between the patient, family and care home.

Disappointing standards compared to mine.

Dear Aldroyd,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the care and treatment provided to your friend. I am sorry to hear of the difficulties experienced and for the distress that has been caused.

Please be assured that this feedback has been sent to the General Manager for the service to ask for the service to investigate and provide an update. Patient checks are carried out at 30-minute intervals and these can be increased where it is clinically reasonable. Training is delivered within NHS Lothian for frequently used medical devices and is governed and updated accordingly.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to share our investigation response through the Care Opinion website, however, if you or your friend would like a formal response to these concerns then please contact our Patient Experience Team (PET) via email: feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk; post: Waverley Gate, 2-4 Waterloo Place, Edinburgh, EH1 3EG; or by telephone on 0131 536 3370 (9am - 2pm).

Many Thanks,

George Ball.

Update posted by Aldroyd (a friend)

Thx. The device is not common but the admission was planned and the requisite training is available in two half hour online sessions every week. It delivers essential medication for Parkinson’s disease.

I will make contact with the PET.
