"Hysteroscopy"

About: Leicester General Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was not aware that I was having this barbaric procedure, I even phoned a couple of days before and they said that is was a follow up.

I walked into the room to be met with an absolutely horrible instrument and a awful Gyne chair on full view.

I sat down and there was a consent form.

I said that I was not aware of anything needing to be done as I was told that ultrasound was normal.

They said it’s because my womb is slightly thicker than it should be so need to check it out for signs of women cancer. We are always told that sooner checked and tested the better with cancer.

They said I could have a GA but would have to come back at a later date and couldn’t say when.

I also asked for a woman to do this as felt uncomfortable with a man whose accent was very thick and seemed to want to rush me. At no point did they say I could have a local anaesthetic. I was not asked any history

I was not told about any risks, just that it might feel discomfort.

I agreed because I didn’t want to wait any longer as being told that you need to be checked for cancer is scary enough.

It was so very very painful, not discomfort. I only got gas and air when I was crying so much as I couldn’t bear the pain. This procedure was barbaric. The doctor also removed a polyp. Surely this should be done in a sterile setting not where people are coming and going in the room

I did not know that there was a polyp or even what it is let alone give consent for them to remove it. I have also had a urine infection after this awful treatment

After reading lots and lots of women’s stories about this it seems that it is regular practice to do it this way. Some women are passing out with the pain.

I found the whole thing traumatising and am still in pain and cannot sit up properly I also can’t pick up my two grandkids with it feeling like I’m being pulled from inside. It is barbaric to do this to women with no prior warning

I am also told that I should be asked if I have ever have been attacked or raped as this can cause flashbacks.

This seriously needs looking into before any more women have to endure this
