"Appreciated NHS services"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Respiratory Medicine (Breathing and Lung Problems) NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Scottish Ambulance Service

(as a relative),

My husband felt unwell. He had fever, stomach pain, nauseous and laboured breathing. I checked his oxygen saturation and blood pressure and both readings were very low.

I was concerned that he may be having another pneumonia episode. I was really worried and felt that he needed to be in hospital. I phoned NHS24 and the call handler was very helpful and listened to us. After a discussion with a nurse, we were advised that an ambulance crew will come to the house to see my husband. After 30 mins or so, a doctor from the Scottish Ambulance Service rang us and checked my husband and informed us that they were worried about his oxygen saturation, however it might take a while before an ambulance can come to the house.

I told him that I can drive and bring my husband to A&E as we live near to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). He was glad to hear this so I dropped my husband in A&E.

I am aware of the long wait in A&E but was confident that they would look after my husband. The following morning I phoned A&E and asked for my husband’s condition and the doctor (Dr Malcolm) shared my husband’s serious condition of Influenza (& pneumonia).

I am truly grateful for the NHS24 call handler and nurse who has evaluated my husband’s condition as serious; the Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctor who checked on him and for the amazing staff (& colleagues) in the A&E department in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

I am also truly grateful for the care he is currently receiving in Ward 107, ARI and my husband said that his consultant is a wonderful and kind doctor (I hope I get his name right, Dr Currie). The staff in Ward 107 have been very supportive and caring.

Dear R Ybon

Thank you for sharing your story.

I am so glad you feel that you received excellent treatment at what must have been a very worrying time.

It was great that you were able to take your husband to A&E rather than waiting for an ambulance and I am glad that the Clinician from the Scottish Ambulance Service advised you to do so after his review.

If you would like me to pass on your thanks to the Clinician could I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, Care Opinion username, your husband's name and the date and address we attended.

I do hope your husband is recovering.

Kind regards

David

Dear R Ybon

Thank you for contacting Care Opinion. I'm sorry to learn your husband has been so unwell and I hope that is making a good recovery. This sounds as though it has been a worrying time for you both. I hope you are doing well too.

Your appreciation for the care your husband has received comes across loud and clear in your story. Well done to all staff involved.

I reply specifically in relation to your contact with NHS 24 on 111. I see our staff recognised how unwell your husband was and arranged onward care. It would be good to share your story with the staff directly. If you would be kind enough to contact me with some additional detail, then I could do this. You can call me on 07814 299944 or email Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Thanks again and best wishes to you both.

Shona

Thank you all for your responses. It was really a worrying time for me, however, being able to get the healthcare intervention on time for my husband was just extraordinary.

My husband is continuing to recover and has expressed his gratitude to the NHS services - NHS24, SAS and NHS Grampian.
