"I felt totally disregarded"

About: Universality hospital wishaw ward 20

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was brought in from GP at 8 weeks old following really high temp and heart rate this was initially put down to vaccinations, however it was then found she had covid and a UTI. I felt totally disregarded during our stay in ward 20, I felt there was poor communication from the nurses and often felt like an inconvenience to them.

I understand lunches are provided to parents however not dinners. With my daughter having covid and breastfeeding I was unable to leave her. Therefore often went without food. Breast milk was given to be stored, and was stored in fridge that other parents had access to and could go in and out if I don’t feel this is safe at all and should of been put in a breast milk only fridge. My daughters cannula tissued and I understand this can happen but since she got admitted on the Sunday nobody had checked the cannula site and would put through antibiotics straight away. I felt unable to buzz for anything or ask for help. It really affected my mental health being in the ward, due to the poor level of care given. I will say the domestic, csws and doctors were all brilliant but many of the nurses that looked after us, were dismissive and often rude. I was never so glad to leave.

Dear Gp071122,

I was really sorry to read about your experience in our Paediatric Ward, in particular how this experience made you feel during what I can only imagine was an already stressful and worrying time with your wee one being unwell.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of the service as we would never want anyone to feel this way.

I wondered if you would want to chat to us some more about your experience so we can look at ways in which we can improve services, particularly around communication and the facilities available in terms of kitchen/food.

If you would want to do this, you can email me at laura.jack@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk and we can take it from there.

Learning from your feedback is really important to us and so thank you for getting in touch - my apologies again.

I hope your daughter is making a good recovery, best wishes.

Laura
