My dad has an eye operation for Ayr hospital and lives in Irvine. He has heart failure, toe amputation that is still heavily bandaged and can't walk any distance.
I called for patient transport for his appointment as we are all working at the time of appointment and he cannot walk the 30mins it would take him to get to nearest bus stop and certainly couldn't get to Ayr hospital on his own volition.
I was told because he can make it to a car no patient transport would come. He can get public transport or we can get appointment changed. They don't do the operations at evenings and he has waited a year for this operation and cannot see properly because of cataract so desperately needs it.
He gets exhausted even getting by car to local doctors surgery as was witnessed by a nurse so his heart nurse, podiatrist and nurse taking bloods now come to house.
But no assistance the only time we have ever asked for it and needed it.
I need to take time off to take him to appointments as he forgets what they tell him and obviously with his health complaints we need to know the details.
As this was drop off I thought patient transport would be ideal but nope not allowed.
I don't understand how seriously ill you must be to justify getting this transport as I know others who can get around much easier than my father who qualify.
