"My son has finally turned a corner"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Children's ward South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services South West Acute Hospital / Paediatric Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My son wasn’t gaining weight and diagnosed with failure to thrive . He was in A&E a couple of times with viral infections, throat infections, and really pale, not even able to cry, his throat was so sore he was sent home time and time again to the point where he had been refusing to eat and drink at about 6 months old. I was beside myself with worry and stress.

I felt fobbed off and not taken seriously at all! I had to sit and cry to a consultant to take his blood tests in the children’s ward when he was admitted due to being dehydrated and not eating . These came back showing he was low on iron and haemoglobin. We were given iron supplements and when they started kicking in helped him massively.

We had also in the meantime been referred to dietitians and they were amazing. Follow ups were done with my son every month with the dietitian and we were given tips on how to help get him some weight back on. Our experience was stressful and poor in some areas, especially with A&E departments and paediatric consultants, but in regards to dietitians working in the health service extremely positive.

My son has finally turned a corner and we are a lot happier and less stressed out family and household.

Dear Vickymg23

I am sorry to hear of your stressful and poor experienced within our ED department, with your son. It is always out mission to protect our most vunerable mebers of our population, with each case dealt with in a individual manner, providing excellent care. In you case, it appears to you that we have fallen below this standard, and for that I apologise. I am sorry you felt fobbed off and not taken seriously, this is not our intention, and for that I apologise also.

Lastly, I am glad to read that your experiences improved, though you hospital journey, that you son continues to thrive, and as a family unit you are alot happier and less stressed.

kind regards

john kerr (Emergency Nurse Practitioner)
