"“We all die sometime”"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Vascular Surgery

(as a relative),

My dad has been investigated for enlarged abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) for last 2-3 years. He was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis approx 1.5-2 years ago.

His ultrasounds showed its getting bigger each time, he broached the subject of surgery when diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis but was told it wasn’t big enough to operate.

We have an extensive family history of ruptured AAA, where my gran died of this and my uncle had been operated so we know that my dad would eventually need operated for this.

Last month he had his ultrasound and meeting with surgeon where he was told that it was now at the size to operate but surgeon said that he wouldn’t as he would be at risk of dying.

My dad wants the operation instead of waiting about for it to sudden rupture and then die. But the surgeon didn’t want to discuss further and stated that we all die sometime, a horrible thing to say to someone who has been given such bad news.

My dad has never had any issues with his pulmonary fibrosis and had never been admitted to hospital with it and his 02 levels are always with normal range.

The way he has been treated is disgusting and hope this surgeon is spoken to about this and hope no one else has to encounter this uncaring person.

Dear

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Please accept my apologies for your Dad’s experience and for the upset and anger this has caused. I have shared your feedback with the General Manager who will discuss this with the surgical team to ensure this does not happen again.

If you would prefer a more formal response to your concerns, can you please contact our Complaints Department at Complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk or telephone 0141 201 4500.

Please pass on my apologies to your Dad.

Regards

John
