"Podiatry Clinic Queen Elizabeth university hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Podiatry

(as a service user),

I was unsure if this was the place to write this .

I attended with my aunt for a few appointments to this clinic. My aunt was treated with great care and kindness by the staff particularly by the students and I have no concerns with the care .

However as an retired lecturer in health I was alarmed an a few occasion by the style of practice teaching I witnessed. One student was belittled and laughed at when she replied to a question asked by her practice teacher and the student was almost in tears. On another occasion I overheard a practice teacher (not sure if this is the correct title) being asked how a student had got this far, which is not constructive feedback.

Does podiatry have standards on practice placements ?

I am due to take my aunt in the new year and hope I do not witness such poor treatment of students

Dear Frostch93

Thank you for bringing your recent experience to our attention. I have shared your story with my colleagues in Podiatry and they have advised:

We have taken the points you have raised seriously and are committed to offering a safe environment for undergraduate podiatry students to learn within. It is evident from your experience we have fallen below this standard.

Our placement offering is governed by the Quality Standards for Practice Learning (QSPL) and prior to this the Quality Standards of Practice Placement (QSPP 2008) to optimise the quality of the learning environment within the practice setting.

As part of our internal governance, we offer all students the opportunity to feedback back thorough completion of a placement questionnaire at the end of each trimester. This is a voluntary and anonymous process which allows us to gauge, amongst other elements, the challenge and support offered to students by the Practice education (PE) Team. We would be happy to share the outcome of this with you as well as offer you the opportunity to speak with a senior member of the PE team when you next attend the department. If you ask to speak to John Tougher or Pamela Price.

We will endeavour to learn from this feedback and further improve the care and learning experience we offer to students as part of their placement exposure.

Thank you

Nicole
