My relative was brought to A&E by ambulance due to difficulty breathing and a new oxygen requirement. On arrival to the department the triage nurse was friendly and attended to us quickly. They made my relative feel safe and explained everything that they were doing. They told us that they would need to find a space with oxygen for us, however.
We were then taken to an area which can only be described as a storage area for trolleys and told that we would be taken to a room as soon as one became available . An hour and a half later we were still waiting to be seen, this did not bother us as we knew the pressures staff face with wait times. What did matter was that I had to fetch a staff member myself as my relative's oxygen had run out and she was having difficulty catching her breath. I dread to think what may have happened had I not been present, as over the 6 hrs we sat in this area not one member of staff approached us or asked if we needed anything.
Countless staff walked past and even cleaned down equipment in front of us, but not one even made eye contact with us. A very friendly visiting paramedic eventually asked if my relative would like a coffee and proceeded to make this for them. Apart from that, almost 7 hrs on since we first arrived we’ve yet to have any communication from a doctor or a nurse in the department. Extremely disappointed in the patient care, dignity and respect given to my relative.
