"I witnessed dedication and professionalism"

About: Fife Community Services / Community Cardiac Specialist Service Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Cardiology & Coronary Care Unit Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I suffered a heart attack in April this year. As you can imagine this was a really traumatic experience not only for me but for my wife and two children. My confidence was shattered and I became very anxious even after successful treatments. I was initially treated at the Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy then at the Royal infirmary Edinburgh. This whole experience was terrifying however the care and compassion I received from the NHS was exemplary to say the least. Everything from the ambulance staff to the nurses, doctors and consultants gave me confidence and reassurance that I was in good hands.

My admiration for the staff of the NHS is incalculable. I have been relatively lucky with my health over the years and rarely had to call on the NHS however when I did they performed to the highest level. I feel lucky and privileged to have received such a high level of care. I don’t think I appreciated the NHS until now. I certainly do have a better understanding and appreciation of the staff and service they provide. I witnessed dedication and professionalism of the highest standard in all areas. After being discharged I felt nervous and a bit vulnerable however this was soon alleviated as I was placed in the care of the Community Cardiac Service, Heart Failure/Cardiac Rehab. This follow up service helped build my confidence and gave me a source of support and information when I needed it most. Rehabilitation after a heart attack was not something I considered or accounted for so to be offered this support was incredible and as important as the initial intervention. I am seven month in recovery and making good progress. I honestly don’t know where I’d be if not for the care I received from everyone along the way. I would really like to thank everyone for taking care of me and my family over the past few months and wish you all the very best in the future.
