"Credit where it's due"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Critical Care Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery

(as a service user),

I was admitted to Treliske Hospital (Royal Cornwall) at 4 in the morning due to a burst ulcer.

The ambulance was with me in under 10 minutes, the ambulance staff stabilised me and rushed me through to the hospital. There was a bit of a wait in the department whist they got what info they needed from me (Medications, conditions etc.) and later I was met by nurses, surgeons, anaesthetists, consultants, doctors etc. who explained I needed emergency surgery.

The whole ordeal was a bit surreal but all the staff were absolutely fantastic, keeping me calm and medicated due to pain. From nurses to doctors, consultants, surgeons etc. and every single one of them went way above and beyond the call of duty.

I woke up later in a high care ward (EPOC) and was in recovery for quite a number of days and nights, and all the time I was there, me and the other patients in my ward were looked after in the most friendly and professional manner. Nothing was too much trouble for all the staff as I was wheeled back and forth for scans, x rays, tests etc.

The nurses and doctors checked on us day and night, back and forth -  taking blood pressure, administering medications, doing tests, etc. I apologise to all the medical staff, because there are so many different types of uniforms that I didn’t really know who was who, but to watch them work a twelve and a half hour shift non stop was amazing, and I never realised just how hard the medical personal work.

I do a tough job on my feet most of the time, but I could never keep up that pace for twelve and a half hours at a time.

The service provided was first class, the friendliness of every single member of staff was overwhelming and the professionalism from everyone was astounding

I am now in recovery and people need to give credit where it's due. I would like to thank all staff members from Treliske Hospital, and I mean everyone, for your professional, friendly and caring attitudes.

Hi rakej17

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us - please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. It must have been very worrying for you to be admitted to hospital so early in the morning. I am so pleased to see that you were dealt with quickly and got the care you needed. I am happy to know that you felt reassured by the team in the Emergency Department and that your pain was treated promptly.

I am glad that the staff you came across treated you in a friendly and professional manner. I agree, they are a fantastic team on EPOC. I am relieved to hear you are now recovering well at home and starting to get back to normal.

I am responding to you as the Patient Experience Lead for the ACCT department which EPOC is a part of, but I will ensure your story is shared with the teams who cared for you while you were with us.

Thank you again for taking the time to share such an honest account of your experience and your continued reassurance to your friends and family that the NHS is here for anyone who needs it.

Hi Kym, thank you for the reply and your caring attitude.

Please give my heartfelt thanks to the surgeons, anesthetists, doctors, consultants, nurses and everyone else involved. I didn't get the chance to thank everyone involved but will be posting the story on social media as well so hopefully it gets shared with all the staff involved.

The care and attention I received was world class and I am forever grateful for that.

I have the utmost respect for all the staff and never knew just how hard they work and what long hours they work and they are always cheerful.

Please pass on this message because I feel bad that I didn't get to thank everyone

Kind regards
