I am writing on behalf of my elderly mother (90 yr old) who was in Chase Farm following a stroke. She was initially treated at UCH and then North Mid where she received excellent care. Supposedly she was at Chase Farm for rehabilitation but her condition went down rapidly . The food was terrible and Mum was constantly hungry relying on food which we took in to her. Her weight dropped. A few staff were kind and caring but the majority were not. The ward she was in was ill managed , she was physically attacked by a dementia patient, her requests to be taken to toilet were frequently ignored,.On at least 3 occassions she was left in the toilet for at least 20 minutes (one nurse admitted she had forgotten she was there) on 2 occassions there had been no light in toilet so she sat in the dark. The ward was over crowded with visitors having to stand due to lack of space and availability of chairs. The ward was dirty. One of the more caring nurses asked the cleaning staff to clean round the bed as a stain from a spilled drink was still on the floor one week after it was spilled. She has now left and in an excellent care home where her health has improved considerably. With hindsight, she would have fared better being taken out of that awful place sooner. I have spoken to 4 people since whose parents have experienced the same or similar over the past few weeks. Surely unacceptable.
