My first night on ward 1 was in a word: traumatic. I was pretty much left to vomit myself happy, with used sick cups being left in my room for hours on end. At night, I was woken up by a few nurses who barged into my room and turned the light on asking if I would mind moving to a room without a toilet as someone else needed it more. I did not want to deprive someone in need however, I knew how much I needed these facilities close at hand so when I asked if I had a choice, the nurse replied with a sharp answer along the lines of I do have a choice … but… I don’t really have a choice. I neither confirmed nor rejected their proposal and all of a sudden I was being wheeled into another side ward. I had to ask for anti sickness medication and one nurse decided that the middle of the corridor was the right place to administer this medication through the tube in my arm. I even said to her “what, here?” and she proceeded to give me an injection which stung so much I nearly started crying...in the corridor, in front of everyone. As I was weak and had nothing in my body, the medication hit me all at once and before I had made it back to my bed I was ready to pass out unable to speak, walk or even keep my eyes open. The neglect of the ward 1 staff during that night was absolutely horrendous and its only my mam having words with the nurses the next day and the involvement of an exceptional doctor which changed the situation for me there. 80% of the nurses have no compassion whatsoever for their patients and in a supposedly ‘caring’ profession they are far from good representatives.
