"Some staff are pleasant and friendly. ..."

About: Croydon University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Some staff are pleasant and friendly. Some of the buildings are spacious, bright and modern.

What could be improved

The relative I visited was only in for a short stay and contracted a Noro-type virus AND a water infection within days. It was spreading throughout the ward like wild-fire and in neighbouring wards.

The cleanliness on the surface seemed ok, but clearly infection control is NOT working. There are wash basin on the entrance to the wards and alcohol gel at the beds, but I didn't see many people using it. The worst offenders were Consultants - I didn't see ONE use these facilities.

The cleaning staff also seemed to handle the food - dishing out meals and collecting plates.

In order to make infection control effective EVERYONE must participate, and all visitors must be made to wash their hands at the basin and apply hand gel. The same applies to ALL staff including the Consultants and Nurses.

Until this happens Mayday will wallow at the bottom of the league tables for patient acquired infections.
