What I liked

I had/have cataract and have held out for Moorfields because it has to be the best.

98% of the staff I met were pleasant and friendly when I attended for the operation.I particularly thank the staff nurse who brought me tea & light refreshments on a tray after the op.

In out patients, the various doctors I saw were clearly very competent and most explained what they were doing/were going to do.

I very much like the volunteer? guides, who direct patients to their clinics etc. This would be a good idea in all hospitals but is specially useful in an eye hospital.

What could be improved

I had a difficult beginning at Moorfields, due to a letter written by a GP I've since parted from, which I thought was designed to show me in a bad light and with the contents of which I disagreed. At some point, my notes were lost, so I would have waited even longer for the op than I did had a trainee GP not gone though my GP notes and written to Moorfields. I suspect I may have waited a bit longer for the cataract op. than is these days seen as optimal best practice. All staff seem to be working flat out; only real professionals could do this on a daily basis. I don't know how they stand the pace & I suspect this is because of govt. targets etc. To my mind, our medical professionals are being badly treated by politicians. I didn't like watching the cataract op video. I didn't like the op., I was lying down with a blue thing over my face, nobody spoke to me, though I could hear the surgeon speaking jokily to colleagues. I felt depersonalised and stressed. Also, had I been warned that water(?) would be copiously used, I'd have asked for protection for my ear as I have a perforated eardrum. The consultant obviously has to concentrate on the op., but lying down, unable to see or speak to anyone, one feels vulnerable. The back of my jumper was soaked at the top.Someone I know had the same op at an out of town hospital at the same time as mine; he sat up, could see nothing because of very bright light but hif face wasn't covered. A nurse held his hand throughout.I think his op sounded more patient-friendly. The 'friends' sandwiches are quite horrible. The sister(?) in reception shouldn't correct staff before patients, nor should she be bossy with patients, most of whom are already feeling stressed whilst waiting to go down for Cataract surgery. I dislike being spoken to as if I'm a naughty child; she & one other (male) nurse (who made a potentially serious mistake) were the only medical staff who failed to act in a friendly and professional way.
