"How a pensioner is treated by this hospital."

About: The Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Anything else?

My mother was transferred from Aintree Hospital on 20/05/2013 for a partial foot amputation. The first complaint I have was she was not moved till 9.30pm on the Monday to be operated on the next day. On the Tuesday she was advised the operation may not go ahead because she was admitted to late the day before. She was starved all day to be told after 4pm the operation was cancelled and was told the operation would be the following day, again it was nil by mouth all day until 3.60pm, again cancelled as an emergency had arisen. She was assured she would be dealt with the following day and no one had ever been cancelled more than twice. On the Thursday she was starved till after 5.30pm then cancelled. After many complaints the consultant advised “mums operation was only a minor amputation and that was why she was be cancelled, he would try to get mum moved to another surgery list were if she was given a date and time no emergency could take that time. He also advised if she was prepared to miss breakfast this morning she may be taken down as an emergency first thing”, needless to say this did not happen. She was given a piece of toast and told she will not have the operation now till sometime next week as it’s a bank holiday weekend. My mother is 77 years old is diabetic has pernicious anaemia, rumatoid arthritis breathing problems and weighs under seven stone. She has been on morphine patches for over 2 years to control her pain. She should not be starved all day as she has to take food with her medication. The food she was given when she was eventually allowed to eat was disgusting, apparently the kitchens are closed for refurbishment and I have no idea where they are preparing the food. Since she has been in hospital she has not had a hot meal. I understand that emergencies arise every day in a hospital, but my mum is not a strong woman. She does have a family to fight her corner but there are people out there with no one to fight for them. While mum has been in hospital there was a woman in the bed opposite who had her operation cancelled on the Wednesday and the same day she died. My mum thinks there just waiting for her to die so they don’t have to deal with her. I would like to know what they class as an emergency and why an old woman has to be treated this way. I will be taking this matter further and I will be going to the press. We hear too often of old people being miss treated in hospital and it is so frustrating not knowing which way to turn. I have not got a good word to pass on about this hospital, even the staff make it clear there not happy working there.
