"Phoenix unit"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

Anything else?

Back in 2004 I was admitted to Sunderland Royal Hospital and after tests I learned that I had Multiple Myeloma, a type of cancer for which there is no cure. It was explained that the condition was treatable and that everything possible would be done to help me along. Since 2004 I have had a number of stays in hospital in Ward E55, and receive ongoing outpatient treatment at the Haematology and Chemotherapy Day Unit (now named the Phoenix Unit) at Sunderland Royal Hospital. From the start I found both the Haematology Ward E55 (now B28) and the Phoenix Unit to be first class, in fact 5-star in my opinion. My experience at the Phoenix Unit is a positive and happy one. I consider the Doctors and Nursing staff treat patients with the utmost care and respect. Their mannerism is cheerful and courteous; uniforms always appear clean, and in general the Nursing staff are well turned out. The Unit is always very clean; handwashing prior to giving treatment is evident and cleanliness in general is excellent. Despite the fact that this is a very busy unit and the staff work under constant pressure, treatment is never compromised. Both Doctors and Nursing staff always have a listening ear in respect of any problems or queries patients may have. Since moving venues, the new Phoenix Unit is much more functional than the previous area. More floor space is evident, the colour schemes, including pictures on the walls, promote a feel good factor which, in my opinion, has a calming effect. I feel that there is no scope for improvement as I consider the Unit to be excellent with more facilities available in which to treat an increasing number of patients, and I fail to see what would need improvement. In conclusion as a patient I feel this is a first class Hospital Unit, with excellent, caring and professional personnel. Ken
