I recently spent 3 days on the ortho ward (23) after an serious accident at work.

The staff, and my treatment, both on the ward and initially in the Minor Injuries Unit was excellent.

There is always a delay of several hours getting initially seen at the MIU and A&E - I'm never quite sure why.

The consultant surgeon installed extreme confidence in me with his utterly professional attitude and I was totally relaxed going into theatre for my operation.

I'm not a fan of the morning rounds with 20 gawping student doctors staring at you, but that's the price of going into an excellent teaching hospital I suppose.

My follow-up treatment in the Fracture Clinic was also excellent, although there can be some waiting on busy days.

My only criticism - the cost of parking in the multi-storey car park.

The Orthopaedic Team at the Newcastle Hospitals aims to deliver high quality care at all times to the patients it serves and we are pleased that you rated your care and treatment following your accident as 5 stars. We are currently trailing a new model of working in the Fracture clinic to see if we can keep delays to a minimum. However as a service which deals with urgent patients (all patients are seen the day after their attendance in the Emergency Department) demand can fluctuate which, at times can cause delays. Delays can also be experienced in the Minor Injuries Unit and Emergency Department if patients require assessment by a specialist or due to the number of patients attending the Units. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to you by these delays. As you rightly point out, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching trust and students may be present during consultations or treatment. If you are not comfortable with this, please inform the staff that you do not wish students to be present. This is entirely your choice and will not affect the care that you receive. Please be assured that we will use your feedback to remind all of our staff to check with patients that they are happy for students to be present when they are being cared for. We acknowledge your comments regarding the cost of car parking at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
