Response from Salford Royal

I am sorry to read that you were dissatisfied with your recent visit here. Salford Royal is a training hospital and as such care is provided by doctors across the spectrum of seniority. Although a patient is referred to a named consultant who is responsible for their care here, the patient can commonly be seen by one of the doctors in the consultant's team. In an outpatient setting, this is commonly senior specilaist trainees (more commonly known previously as registrars) and staff grade doctors. These doctors are qualified and competent to deliver this care and the consultant is involved with the oversight of decisions that are made.

Regarding management of ovarian cysts, it is common for these to be managed conservatively depending on the findings of investigations such as ultrasound, which appears from your description to be the suggested treatment plan. Cysts can disappear themselves without any treatment in due course; however, if problems persist and symptoms worsen, the doctor may recommend surgical intervention. The NHS Choices page on Ovarian Cysts has more useful information on this subject.

If however you do not feel your care has been handled appropriately, we will welcome the chance to investigate further. If you would like us to do this, please contact our PALS team (pals@srft.nhs.uk) who can assist further with this.
