"appalling birth experience"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

Anything else?

My.sister gave birth last November. After getting to.pilgrim and it being really obvious she is in extreme pain and obviously in labour she was sent from the labour ward to the maternity ward given cocodamol despite being in sheer agony. For 5 hours she wasn't checked and when my self and her husband had had enough and asked the midwife to check her she was found to be 8 cm. She was told she couldn't have her birthing cd on as it was rock music and spent her pushing time with 7 trainees gawping at her when she didn't give permission. She was given pethedin even though she stated she did not want it.

Finally after her son was born for 4 hours! She was left in a dirty bed with blood and every thing else still covering her. She asked for a shower or a wash but no.body came to clean her up. I eventually went to the midwife station and asked for bowls and towels I'll do it myself.

I will not be having a child at pilgrim

I am so sorry about your sisters experience; the standards you have described fall way below the standards we expect and our Head of Midwifery was extremely disappointed to read this. Please can you pass on our apologies to your sister and tell her that if she wants to get in touch with us directly to discuss we would be happy to do so. Also I want you to know that we have many, many really positive accounts and feedback about our maternity care at Pilgrim and whilst I can appreciate and understand how a poor experience can cloud the future our Head of Midwifery would be very willing to discuss any of your concerns. You can contact her directly if you wish at: hazel.harrison@ulh.nhs.uk Thank you again for your feedback.
