"Listening to patients is the most important "

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Parkwood inpatient unit

(as the patient),

It takes forever to get home. I think patients should be able to go when they feel ready to go. Listen to patients more.

The staff I saw were good but they do need to listen to you more. Short staffed – staff off sick and replaced (partly) by people who are not familiar with your illness. I don’t talk to Bank staff only regular staff, so you need to ensure it’s the usual staff on the ward because it’s really important to be listened to.

Thank you for your observations. We always try to ensure that we work with patients when planning for discharge, but there may be occasions when the clinical team do not believe it to be in the patients best interests of them to go home even if the patient thinks it is. We should always explain the reasons for this at the time and I am sorry this did not happen in your case. We agree with your observations regarding the difficulty individuals have to talk to non-regular members of staff and try really hard to keep the use of bank and agency staff to a minimum.
