Today patients have the right to choose the location of their care. When I was diagnosed with a three large brain tumours I was offered the choice of two hospitals but to be honest having just received such devastating news I was not ready to understand the implications.

We chose Hull Royal on the recommendation of our consultant and to be fair are glad we did. We found Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI). The neurosurgery ward had just undergone a full revamp and it was therefore in excellent condition.

In the last two decades we have noticed a decline in overall cleanliness which is a shame as the staff have always been so helpful. During my trials I know that the staff were so supportive and tried their best to accommodate my family going over and above what one might expect.

I can verify being treated with dignity and respect and witnessed other patients with different consultants treated likewise. I have had the unfortunate experience of sampling a number of wards and didn't experience any drop in the standard of care.

The hospital is quite dated and the health care trust no doubt have a struggle to run such a large hospital it must be financially crippling, nonetheless they seem to be doing okay. It has cost us quite a bit over the years with the many consultants I see and we could transfer to a hospital nearer to our home, but to be truthful we have no intention of doing so. My consultants have come to know me yet despite the time and costs to travel to and from the hospital we find the way we are treated worthy of staying with it.

These are of course my personal observations and as each case is different I could expect others to disagree, but my comments are truthful. The options below about when you visited the hospital are limiting and don't one to display it accurately. I have been a patient since 1999 and am still one today (April 2013) and therefore feel I am able to give an unbiased review.

I sure hope that you have not come to my review as a serious patient and can only hope your experience is as positive as mine have been.
