"Cheese and Biscuits for patient at 1 am on Ward..."

About: Lister Hospital

Anything else?

I received some excellent care on ward 7bn.

I was moved to Ward 7bn urology after my surgery which I had about noon on Wednesday 17th April 2013. I don't remember too much about the wednesday afternoon but I do remember the nursing staff taking my blood pressure and temperature and asking me how much pain I was in on Wednesday evening.

What I do remember very clearly is been woken at 1 am in the morning by the patient opposite me who was very distressed and confused . Very quickly a number of nurses were at his bed side to try to comfort him. The man was asking for Cheese and Biscuits . I remember one of the nurses saying she would try to find some but it was 1 o clock in the morning.

At about this point I began to Vomit and quickly I had a number of nurses at my bed side changing my hospital bed gown and sheets. One of the nurses then changed the dressing on my wound. Another Nurse ask if I was in a lot of pain and I said that when I tried to move it hurt. Another nurse at this point was taking my blood pressure, Temperature and pulse . Out of no where a nurse appeared with two bottles saying I should try to urinate . The nurses helped me out of bed and then closed all the curtains around me and left me. I used the bottles and was slowly getting back into bed when suddenly a number of nurses appeared and helped me into bed. A nurse then gave me an injection which she said would help me sleep and help with the pain. As I lay back in bed and my pain slowly going away I remember the nurses returning to the man in the bed opposite me . The confused man was asking what time it was . When he was told that it was 5 past 1 in the morning . He said that it was 1 am hours ago. I smiled to my self as a nurse returned with some cheese for the confused man . As I drifted of to sleep the voice of the confused man was asking the time when he was told it was 10 past one am .He was saying 1am was hours ago and He began to ask for Sausage, Bacon and eggs.

I was woken about 6:30 am by a nurse taking my vital signs she asked how I was and said that tea and Coffee would be around shortly and that breakfast was 8 am . She then helped me out of bed and showed me where the toliets and wash areas were and explained that the doctors would be around during the morning to examine me and if the doctors thought I was well enought , I could be on my way home by noon.

All the staff of Ward 7bn gave me excellant care during the morning of 18th April 2013 and I was home early lunch time.

Sounds like not only were the team on ward 7B north at the Lister having a pretty busy night, nothing was too much trouble when it came to ensuring their patients - many of whom like you will have been recovering from surgery - got the care and attention needed. Indeed the picture you have patients is at complete odds to that described by the health services detractors through the national media.

Quite rightly, poor standards of care should always be exposed and dealt with quickly, but you have reminded us that day-in, day-out, there are nursing teams quietly getting on with providing high quality and compassionate care to their patients. But it's the words of patients like you that bring their efforts to light - which is why we know that the team on 7B north will be delighted to see your feedback.

Thanks again so much for letting us know what you thought of your care whilst at the Lister and may we wish you a continued and steady recovery from your surgery.
