"Most of the staff were kind and ..."

About: St Mary's Hospital (Portsmouth)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Most of the staff were kind and sympathetic but I feared they were stretched too far by all they had to do. The heavy procedure to replace the morphine drip took half an hour and seemed to leave the poor nurse worn out.

What could be improved

The old fashioen drugs trolley, where one nurse gave out the painkillers would be more efficient than 4 nurses running after the drugs for us 4 patients.

After my hysterectomy I was given no advice about eating. I wish that I'd been advised not to eat anything solid for a few days. My midwife friend said that she was shocked that I'd been given solid food so soon after an operation and wasn't surprised that I'd had such terrible constipation.

Thank you very much for your constructive feedback and your comments will be passed onto the ward staff. Feedback is extremely valuable as it enables us to understand the patients' perspective and gives us the opportunity to reflect and learn from their experiences. We apologise for the delay in the replacement of the morphine pump; this may have been caused by the nurse having difficulty in accessing another nurse to check the dosage. Morphine is a controlled drug and there are strict policies in place for its administration. Advice about eating is available and we apologise for the lack of information given to you. We do advise patients who have had major gynaecological surgery to sip clear fluids immediately post-operation and then to eat a light breakfast of tea and toast. Food is gradually introduced over the day. We do advise against fizzy drinks and high fibre foods that can aggravate wind pain.
