"Admission to Critical Unit in A & E"

My mother had a suspected stroke and was taken to A & E by ambulance. We joined a queue of patients on trolleys in a corridor. I had to stand, despite an arthritic hip, because there were no chairs.

After a couple of hours, we were put into a cubicle where they did blood tests, etc, then put back into the corridor. I did mention to a nurse that the adverts on TV say to get someone with a suspected stroke to the hospital within 3 hours and that we'd been waiting far longer than that.

The nurse just laughed and said "Yes, they don't tell you about the queues on the telly do they".

Eventually, after being there for almost 7 hours, we were finally put into the holding bay and my mother saw a doctor.

The ambulance crew had to wait with us for almost 5 hours as my mother was on their trolley. They were finally given an empty trolley and left.

This is ridiculous! ! ! That's 5 hours that they could be out helping someone else just before they needed an empty trolley.

Could the hospital not have a few spare trolleys? ? ? ?
