"My mother's broken ankle - unacceptable wait"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother broke her ankle at the end of January 2013. Her treatment at East Surrey had, until recently, been excellent- to the extent that she felt moved to write them. Her plaster was removed on mid March and the ankle and leg was placed in a protective boot with which she is only allowed to put 50% weight on the foot. She should have had this removed on at the end of April but as an appointment was not available on that date, she was was given an appointment for the following week which was an annoyance but acceptable. However, today she received a letter moving the appointment to JUNE- some 6 weeks after the boot should apparently have been removed.

The physio will not carry out further therapy until my mother has seen the hospital consultant and for as long as she is wearing the boot, she is unable to properly weight bear. The reason given by the hospital was that the consultant is on annual leave. Given that my mother, AT NO POINT in her treatment has actually seen this consultant, it seems extraordinary that her treatment is being held up for this reason. I would have thought that this delay would have a severely detrimental effect on her recovery as her mobility is obviously compromised whilst she has this boot -for an extra six weeks unnecessarily. I find this utterly ridiculous and unacceptable
