My mother was admitted into a ward following diagnosis of aortic valve degeneration. She was assessed by consultant and surgeon and it was decided that she was fit enough to undergo full open heart surgery to have the aortic valve replaced, the surgeon detailed this in her notes as did the consultant. She had a severe chest infection for which she was being administered antibiotics. I did notice that she was becoming severely breathless and wheezy which I did bring to the attention of various nurses within the ward and to the attention of the ward sister and all I was told was that she was being monitored. The following day I received a phone call in early hours of the morning that she was in ICU (Ward 26) following a pulmonary edema. The care afforded to my mother in ICU was beyond reproach following which a TAVI procedure was carried to implant an aortic valve following which the care given to her post operation was excellent.

I will not recommend the ward - care was minimal and feedback from nurse(s) and more importantly Ward Sister was minimal to non-existent.

As I have mentioned the care within ICU and then later within Ward 24 & 24a was excellent and a complete positive comparison to that within her previous ward. Can I also add that her consultant and his treatment was excellent.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your comments regarding the standard of care your mother received whilst a patient within the Freeman Hospital. We are grateful for your very positive comments on the care she received in ITU (Ward 26) and 24/24a, which you found to be excellent. We very much regret that you found the care on the surgical ward was not at the same high standard and that you felt the ward sister was not visible on the ward. As an organisation we believe the ward sister has a pivotal role in leading the ward and setting standards and are keen to ensure high standards are consistent across the whole organisation.
