About: Good Hope Hospital

Anything else?

I had never been to this hospital before but was referred to have a Proctography x-ray. No one seemed to know where we had to go - there were no wheelchairs available so we walked around a while following directions from hospital staff that turned out wrong. Went to x-ray then told somewhere else so I don`t know which department I ended up in..Poor signage.we got to the correct one so I was in agony as I have spinal problems as well. The procedure while I expected it to be undignified and embarrasing was made worse by the fact that the x ray machine wasn`t working properly. whilst I should have been sat on a type of commode which turned out to be a cardboard box thing on a flat surface, in pain as my bowel had been filled with 2 large syringes full of something out of a weetabix box - yes really - mixed with something in a normal kitchen mixer / juicer.I thought they could have done this ready or at least as I was getting in position. there was the female doctor and 2 female nurses but a man came in for which they apologised but asked if he would be ok to look at the machine while he was there. After several attempts the picture was not as was required but they felt it would be good enough so I had to "go" but the space where I was sat meant the x-ray machine was right up against my left side and the other side didn`t have any room so my legs were clamped together. It was really not the right type of equipment for the job ! I was unable to do anything even when I asked if I could stand and use the methods I have to usually to use to be able to go which was painful and akward and no space at all and I was unable to get in the position I have to to manually manouver things to get it out.I was given 4 attempts to go then they said they thought the picture should be ok and the doctor would write her opinion of what she thought the problem was - I would challenge anyone with a normal bowel to perform within 10 minutes when told to in front of people - the purpose of the test was to see which type of bowel surgery I need and I could clearly see the screen next to me like a black and white tv and so I know it won`t show which op I need so I am no further now and am going to phone my Consultant tomorrow to explain what happened.as soon as i got out the room I went to the toilet and was able to go completely having the room to be able to do what I have to do to expel poo. That was what they needed to see but it was impossible in the conditions and circumstances.I was in bed in relentless pain for the next 4 days.I was in too much pain and tired to wait in the queue to claim travel costs and they were asking people for parking tickets which we wouldn`t have at that point so I have just had to fill a form in, having no proof of putting the petrol in even though it was a 60 mile round trip.I now have to wait to see my surgeon in 4 months time for the results which is why I would have the test again
