"policy on operation cancellations"

About: Royal Preston Hospital

Anything else?

I am interested in knowing your policy on the cancellation of operations as a family member has had their operation cancelled on no less than 3 occasions. the latest one less than 24hours before they were due to book in as an in patient. no new date has been given as to when the operation will now take place! their condition has now deteriorated to the point where they are struggling to work and pain killers are no longer working! their day to day life is being ruined surely 3 cancellations is beyond normal guidelines and not knowing when they can expect to now have their operation is not usual practice or is it? if so the situation needs looking into as a matter of urgency. I'm am absolutely disgusted by the situation. And answers need to be given asap

Thank you for providing feedback about the care and treatment we provide. The hospital has been exceptionally busy in recent months. We have had no option but to postpone procedures for a number of patients to make sure we can give care that is safe and effective to those already in hospital, and to release theatre staff to provide support on wards. We have also postponed some procedures that may require intensive care after the operation due to the unusually high number of patients with critical care needs. Every decision to postpone a procedure involves a doctor, who assesses the clinical need of the individual patient and considers the implications of any delays in treatment. We appreciate that postponing a procedure can create inconvenience and concern, and disrupts home and work life, for which we sincerely apologise. If you would like to provide further details, or would like a personal response, please email customer.care@lthtr.nhs.uk, or you can speak with our PALS team on 01772 522972.
