Anything else?
My Father who is 75 was admitted nearly 8 weeks ago after 3 falls. He had not injured himself but the hospital needed to run tests, on the recommendation of a GP, to determine whether he had Parkinson's Disease. He has Dementia which he has had for about 6 years.
When he was admitted he could hold a conversation, understand what was being said, walk, and move his arms freely. Now he can barley do any of these things.
The family has had to go from arranging accomodation in a care home, to a nursing home such is his deterioration. He has had no stimulation, no physiotherapy, no speech therapy, and left to sit in a chair all day staring at ther floor. This is the worst possible situation for someone with dementia!
He was prescribed medication for Pakinson's following a brain scan, which was later stopped with no consultation with the family. His dementia medication was also stopped with no discussion once again!
His ward has been rife with re-occuring bouts of Norovirus,( he also had severe diarrhea) which for the last 3 weeks has been preventing him from being discharged into the nursing home.
During a visit I found the immediate area around his bed was digusting. My shoes literally 'stuck' to the floor. There were ingrained tea stains, dust, pools of water, and I discovered the grapes that I had previously taken him in the cupboard rotting amongst his clothes. I took a bag of washing home, only to discover a diarrhea covered t-shirt which was amongst all his other clothes, not even in a seperate bag!
This is only 'tickling' the surface, there is much more I could add.
My Mother was in with a broken femur, she became incontinent while she was there. She wet the bed while I had rushed to get the commode, urine ran out onto the floor below her bed, and when the nurse came she used the bed sheet as a mop with her foot, no disinfectant, nothing. I then walked in it. It is absolutely appalling at this hospital and if you are over 70 years of age you are in big trouble because in my opinion there is definitely age discrimination here.
My sister and I who both work full-time and have family, have joint Power of Attorney for our parents, and we have made a formal complaint and will be following it up.
