I attended AED this evening after experiencing lower back pain that got progressively worse over 7 days culminating in severe pain this evening. I went on NHS Direct website that Advised I visit AED with my symptoms. Working full time I am unable to get an emergency GP appointment. I attended AED and was promptly booked in by the clerk who was polite, courteous and efficient and waited to be triaged. After approx 90 mins ( I thought I was going to get assistance and would have waited all night) I was called by the triage nurse, for what I naively thought, to be assessed. How wrong was I. The "assessment" lasted less than one minute. I advised of my pain and how I thought it occurred and was met with a curt reply of "it's not a trauma injury, you need to go to your GP". I was a little shocked by this and advised that the pain was now severe and I could not get a GP appointment at short notice and was advised to attend a walk in centre. I apologised to the Triage Nurse for wasting her time and exited the triage room. In theory the walk in centre was he correct advice . However, I attended the AED for assistance in relieving my pain but left feeling chastised and that I was wasting the Triage Nurses time....thanks for that. After a 12 hour shift in work in pain I did not take the decision lightly to attend AED lightly. I consulted NHS. Direct and followed the advice to attend hospital. I guess NHS Direct should update their advice to attend AED but not RLBUHT. It pains me to write such a negative review of the the Royal but I needed their assistance but was sent away as if I was a naughty schoolboy.....and still in pain.....apologies for wasting their time
