"very little communication from staff"

About: Tameside General Hospital

(as a relative),

I am new to this Hospital due to moving house. A family member was recently admitted and I was appalled by the rudeness of some of the staff. There was no communication other than a call asking for the next of kin to my brother in law when in actual fact it was my Husband they wanted and all details had been given and written in the notes on admission.

He returned the call quoting the Doctors name and the switchboard asked when he had been admitted. The actual ward could not find the said Doctor so contact was never made. A change of ward was needed so a wheelchair arrived at visiting and our family member was told to get into it with no discussion the linen was then ripped off the bed (literally) and when I asked what was happening I was told she was going to a new ward the nurse pointed across the building telling us it was over there and promptly marched off at high speed pushing the wheel chair. We could not keep up and made our own way (we are only young), ridiculous. There was no previous communication or advise. I myself trained in a general hospital many years ago and have never seen such poor standards as on these occasions. Care and communication is key!

Please accept my apologies for your recent poor experience at Tameside General Hospital and thank you for taking time to share this via the Patient Opinion website. I absolutely agree that care and communication is key and first impressions last. Clearly this is not what we aspire to at Tameside Hospital and I would be happy to investigate your concerns further. Should you wish to do so, please contact the complaints coordinator on 0161 622 6025 who will be happy to help. Kind regards John Goodenough Director of Nursing Would you like to help the hospital to improve its services further? We are currently looking for patients and carers to become involved in a development called “Patient Stories”. We want to know more about our services from the point of view of those who received them – what was good, bad, what could be improved, what should be changed. Want to know more about what’s involved? Please contact John Goodenough, Director of Nursing at john.goodenough@tgh.nhs.uk
