"Where have all the dentists gone?"

About: Central Lancashire PCT

(as the patient),

I'm happy with my GP's surgery, but have recently been removed from my dentists lists - along with a total of 18,000 people from the 3 dentists that used to do NHS work until they got a contract that ripped them off.

I need a good dentist used to dealing with disabled people, and who doesn't handle your teeth like they're pulling nails out of wood. My last dentist was extremely good, but was forced into releasing patients because of the appalling contract they were given.

I'm afraid that the oversized PCTs are killing the NHS with red tape and squandered money. I would sooner see the PCTs killed off,a long with hospital trusts etc and replaced with something less bureaucratic and more efficient, and more in tune with what people want.

Response from Julie-Ann Bowden, Clinical Quality and Assurance Manager, NHS Central Lancashire

Dear KenW, It is pleasing to hear from patients when they are satisfied with the care provided by their GP. The provision of NHS dentistry continues to be one of the top priorities for NHS Central Lancashire. We are working to increase access to dental treatment, and recently announced in the local media that both interim and permanent solutions are being secured to provide replacement and new dental activity. If you require further assistance in accessing a dentist, you can register your name on the PCT Dental Access database, by completing an online registration form on the PCT website. If you type 'dental access’ into the search box, you will be directed to the form. Alternatively, you can call 01772 401189 and register over the phone. You have made general comments regarding the dental contract and standard of care provided. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on these issues without further information. If you wanted to become more involved in the decisions being made about services delivered, you can contact the PCT Community Engagement Team on 01772 644574. Thank you for contributing your story on the Patient Opinion website. I hope that I have gone some way towards reassuring you that NHS Central Lancashire is committed to increasing dental access with the work that is currently underway.
