"Rip Off Car Parking Fees"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

I brought my husband into A&E with DVT. He was taken to B1 and was at the hospital for tests all day. I had to drive him there and stayed with him for support. It cost almost £8 to park which is more expensive than a day's parking in Leeds city centre. I cannot see where the money is being spent on provision of car parking other than the new barriers.

I am aware there were plans for a multistorey car park to provide more space as there is currently a lack of provision, however this has yet to materialise.

I would very much like to know why parking is so expensive at Rotherham with nothing to show for the fees paid.

Response from Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you for taking the time to post your opinion on the web site.

Car parking at any hospital is a contentious issue. Here at Rotherham we took the decision that we needed to ensure patients are able to park as easily as possible whilst providing a safe and secure environment. In order to put this in place along with a number of improvements, we need to make a charge for parking.

Income gained from parking has been used to pay for additional security around the site i.e. Security patrols, additional CCTV cameras and includes the complete renewal of all external lighting. Since these improvements have been put in place crime on the site has reduced by over 80%, which we are really pleased with.

We feel, in retrospect that patient parking, charged at a maximum rate of £6.50 per day, or £1.60 for 2 hours, £2.10 for 2 - 4 hours is appropriate and is comparable with other hospitals in the surrounding area.
