"left to weigh my baby with no help"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Health visiting

(as a service user),

The Friday clinic at Golcar clinic ended because the clinic was being closed. New time was on a Thursday at Sure Start on Beech Road.

At Golcar the health visitor weighed the baby and put information on a graph and in the book. At the sure start place I didn’t know what I needed to do, health visitor just told me to undress the baby and weigh her and mark it up on the graph, I wasn’t sure how to do this and felt scared. Health visitor was not in the same room as me – in a different room making calls or doing other things, couldn’t they make the calls after the clinic was over?

But because they weren’t in the room I didn't know who to ask about how to do things and I didn't have help. Couldn't get the baby carrier easily and had to leave the baby on the table. At my sister’s clinic in Brikby it’s different, health visitors are there with you to help. Not sure what happened to my original health visitor.

Dear Neon691

Thank you for taking the time to post details of your experience on Patient Opinion and I am sorry that the process of weighing your baby left you scared. I have passed on your comments to Lorraine Williams, Team Leader, who would like to say:-

The Colne Valley Health Visiting Team would like to apologise for any upset or misunderstanding caused when you attended clinic at the GCM Sure Start Centre which is held on Tuesday morning. The drop in clinic run by the Health Visiting Teams offers 2 options and it is usually the sure start staff who greet parents and ask which option you would like (if you wish to see the Health Visitor or are just attending to weigh your baby). The sure start staff then direct parents to the appropriate room or waiting area.

1. The Health visitors or nursery nurses are happy to see you if you have any concerns about your baby, have any questions you would like to ask or if you just want your baby weighing and plotting on the graph in the red book.

2. If you just want to weigh your baby rather than wait for the Health Visitor or Nursery Nurse you can weigh your baby yourself on the scales provided in a separate room. Many parents prefer to do this rather than wait until the Health Visitor or Nursery Nurse is free. However this should have been clearly explained to you by the member of staff present. Health Visitors work very closely with the Sure Start staff to provide you and your baby with the care you need so your comments have been shared with them also and staff have been reminded to explain the process.

If you have any concerns or worries or wish to speak to me directly then please do contact me as the last thing we want is for you to be worried or upset about this episode.

Thank you

Lorraine Williams
