My Father spent two weeks in Cardiology, albeit he had a brain tumour, before being transferred to the regional experts in Southampton. The hospital is well laid out, clean, new and well appointed. However the staff didn't appear to know what was going on. Too many layers and no communication. The staff nurse literally invented things about my Father's presentation to the orderlies who transferred him to Southampton! I wonder if he read the notes at all. I appreciate he was on a ward that did not specialise in his condition, but that's their system. Staff should therefore be trained or familiar with his presentation & appropriate care. The physio had no appreciation for his condition & made foolish conclusions when he actually needed a craniotomy & radiotherapy. Nurses are caring, but without any element of authority or discretion. There are no doctors at the weekend! Every other industry has to use staff rotas - people don't stop being sick at the weekend! No doubt this is more a reflection on the NHS than QA.
