"Admission for Surgery"

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as the patient),

Planned admission for surgery.

Anaethetist & Recovery excellent. The rest appalling.

No aftercare advice or care through the first night.

Noise on the ward unbelievable inc. one patient watching TV on laptop at 3AM without headphones. Staff constantly chatting with each other with no attempt to lower voices at all. (social chat not crucial medical care discussions).

Toilets unclean - after cleaner left! On one occasion I had to lift a used disposable bedpan off the toilet seat before I could use it.

Inconsistent care. Checked one minute then left for very long periods with nothing.

Pharmacy closes at 1PM every Saturday which in itself seems madness for a major hospital like this. Staff did not plan pre order of medication in time so delayed by over two hours while someone had to walk the wards looking for appropriate drugs. Eventually sent home with partial prescriptions & had to find a chemist at 5PM on a Saturday to ensure enough medication for the weekend.

The delay in discharge is inecusable bearing in mind the pressure on beds & it was caused through an avoidable problem.
